Just under two years until the opening ceremony, securing tickets for some high demand 2028 Olympics events has become even more challenging, with this week’s second ticket drop showing low inventory for many track and field sessions and prices starting at over $1,000.
For those chosen in the second ticket ballot, which had sales that started on Monday, only seven track and field options were made available for events on July 17 to July 20, 2028 even though the entire track and field program runs from July 15 to July 30, 2028.
Tickets on sale in the second track and field drop begin at $1,035.35 with the highest prices at 2,460.76 for sessions that include a range of qualifiers, semifinals and finals. None of the $28-$200 ticket options were listed and by Friday even some of the $1,035.35 were sold out.
Scarcity for the latest drop was not limited to track and field, with more than 30 sports like basketball, gymnastics, beach volleyball, golf and tennis having no ticket availability.
The current sales period will end on August 20 and the higher prices and low inventory for roughly 14 million tickets for the 2028 Games are now expected after more than 4 million tickets were sold in the first drop. LA28 organizers have not revealed how many ticket drops will be held, if the amount of tickets available per drop has been evenly divided and if more lower priced tickets will appear in future sales.
April’s first drop of sales saw people from 85 countries and all U.S. 50 states buying tickets in droves, with top sales coming from the US, UK, Canada, Mexico and Japan and a half a million of the promised one million $28 tickets going to Los Angeles and Oklahoma residents as part of a special presale.
But those who were selected for the general ballot criticized the initial drop’s affordable ticket availability and unexpectedly high service fees. If the sales trend from the first drop continues in the second session, around 5 million ticket would be available in a future sales window.
Last month, organizers confirmed that its official ticket ballot registration had soared to 12 million people, significantly higher than the 5 million for the first drop, which opened registration in January.
