Brooks has come a long way since the original release of their “Hyperion” line, and if you’ve tried the Hyperion 2 versus their earlier releases of the Hyperion Elite and Hyperion Tempo in 2020, you’ll understand what I mean. As the running world advanced with super-shoes and super-trainers, Brooks seemed to lag behind in terms of technology.
Their shoes felt either too bulky, had a cheap feel, or couldn’t keep up with other brands. However, Brooks has found its footing with the Hyperion 2. The new feel of the Hyperion 2, in my opinion, is due to their “DNA Flash v2” foam, which is 10 percent more responsive than the earlier version while also being lighter. This gives the Hyperion 2 a light and responsive feel that is perfect for a mix of easy and tempo days—something their previous models definitely couldn’t offer.
The biggest factor restoring my faith in Brook’s shoes is their pro-athletes involvement in the shoe development process. Brooks’ top athlete, Josh Kerr — a two-time Olympic medalist and world record holder in the indoor two-mile and road mile — is highly involved in creating Brooks shoes. Kerr is often featured on podcasts, videos and in written content, discussing his involvement in the creation process for the latest Brooks models.
He recently set the Mile World Best (not a world record due to elevation) in the Hyperion Max 2, showcasing the improvements in Brooks shoes. But does this improvement trickle down to us regular runners?
Changes and Notable Features
The Brooks Hyperion 2 comes into 2024 with a whole new look (and feel), but let’s start with what’s staying the same. The Hyperion 2 keeps the same 8mm drop and the same price of $140… and that’s about it. Starting off with the changes, my favorite update is the new “DNA Flash v2” foam.
Brooks’ premium foam has been updated to be 10 percent faster and significantly lighter. This change gives a more upbeat, lighter feel to the Hyperion, making it a tempo shoe that actually has the capability to handle tempo runs. This feeling is further enhanced by the new mesh upper, which provides a breathable feel and comfortably hugs the foot without squeezing it too tightly. Brooks also added to the comfort by joining the rest of the running world and increasing the stack height by 4mm in both the heel and the toe—a subtle but noticeable difference.
These quality changes from Brooks have shifted my thoughts on their $140 price tag from “These aren’t worth $140” to “How are these $140?” The Hyperion delivers true quality for a shoe at this price point. I personally believe it’s up there with shoes like the “Pegasus Plus and Endorphin Speed 4” for $30-$40 less. The DNA foam, combined with the lightweight feel, allows switching between easy and tempo paces naturally, without any type of plate. The shoe feels comfortable as well as supportive, offering the right mix of responsiveness and softness.
Overall, Brooks has not only improved their production from the previous model but has created a trainer that can compete with other brands—something I didn’t think I’d say. Now, I’m genuinely excited to see what Brooks has planned for the future.
Personal Opinions
I can confidently say the Brooks Hyperion 2 blew me away. Brooks’ updated technology, lightweight construction, and responsiveness represent a substantial upgrade from many of their previous shoes. This, in turn, gives this shoe the broadest range of any Brooks trainer to date, allowing it to handle both easy and tempo paces effortlessly. The soft midsole provides a cushioned ride without the massive stack height of some other shoes, while the “DNA” foam offers a responsive feel. Similar to the Nike Pegasus and the New Balance FuelCell Rebel,
I’ve found myself running faster than my easy pace with the same effort, which is a big confidence boost.
Overall Thoughts
At its price point of $140, the Brooks Hyperion 2 is one of, if not the best, daily trainer/uptempo shoes. The “DNA” foam in the midsole paired with the breathable mesh upper allows for a super lightweight and responsive feel. After putting over 45 miles on this shoe, it has proven to be one of the highest quality shoes; minimal wear is visible on the midsole, and the tread is still intact.
Overall, the Brooks Hyperion 2 has renewed my faith in the Brooks brand, and I think everyone looking for a daily trainer, workout shoe, and non-carbon racing shoe should 100 percent give it a shot.
