Patrick Kiprop and Sharon Lokedi soared to a Kenyan podium sweep at the B.A.A. 10K on Sunday in Boston while Tatyana McFadden was victorious again in her return to the city while Daniel Romanchuk roared to an event record.
Kiprop found redemption after a fifth place finish at the Boston 5K in April as he powered his way to a 27:55 win in the men’s race after staying patient while Andrew Alexander took an early lead.
The chase group that included Kiprop, Adriaan Wildschutt, Dawit Seare, Hagos Gebrhiwet, William Amponsah, Ahmed Muhumed and Alexander Mutiso crossed the 5K mark at 14:29 but were still ten seconds behind Alexander, who continued to surge.
But by the 8K point, Alexander faded to ninth place and well off of his strong start as Kiprop, Wildschutt, Seare and Gebrhiwet roared ahead at 21:41. Kiprop shifted gears as he pulled past the remaining lead group one by one and cruised in for the the.
“Boston has a great atmosphere,” Kiprop said. “I was here for the Boston Marathon and the atmosphere was very, very good.”
Wildschutt was second in 28:06 and Seare took third in 28:06.
In the women’s race, Lokedi grabbed a 31:28 victory after breaking away late for another win in the city after grabbing her second straight Boston Marathon title in April.
Lokedi was part of a lead group of six competitors who broke off early and crossed the 5K mark at 16:10 and mostly stayed locked together as she rolled with Daisilah Jerono, Veronica Loleo, Rachael Rudel and Winfred Mbithe through 8K at 25:30.
But Lokedi knew she was familiar with the city, the roads and the course as she kicked late and took the win over Rudel who finished in second in 31:31 and Loleo, who was third in 31:33.
“I get the support from the people on the road and I think that motivates me,” Lokedi said. “This year, it was still hot, but it was not as bad as last year, so that was good. I just had to make sure I was hydrated.”

In the men’s wheelchair, Romanchuk stormed to a 19:53 win — by a three minute and elevent second margin for a new course record at the event, while McFadden won the women’s wheelchair in 23:59, winning by over two minutes and has now claimed two of the three B.A.A. Distance Medley races.
The Boston Athletic Association said that 9,883 participants crossed the finish line in Sunday’s race out of 9,891 people who started, marking the largest field in the event’s 14-year history.
