Just over a week from the final in Brussels, the Diamond League series shifts back to Switzerland for the Weltklasse Zürich meeting on Thursday.
A solid lineup across nearly two dozen events will be tasked with electrifying Letzigrund Stadium as the late push to gather points ahead of the close of season.
The action gets a head start on Wednesday with the women’s pole vault city event at Wanner Hall inside Zurich Main Station as Angelica Moser faces off against a field of nine other athletes that included Katie Moon, Nina Kennedy, Sandi Morris and Tina Šutej for the only event of program.
On Thursday, a packed Letzigrund Stadium will play host to a busy schedule despite the bulk of the slots in the upcoming final already being decided.
Masai Russell is still eyeing world record ambitions in the women’s 100m hurdles after inching closer with a 12.14 stunner in Xiamen in May as she takes on a solid group while Tobi Amusan, Nadine Visser, Alaysha Johnson and Ditaji Kambundji are set to line up in what will be one of the more contested battles on Thursday.
In the men’s pole vault, Mondo Duplantis rides the momentum of big statement wins last week in Lausanne and Silesia and a plan to dominate in Zurich will be on the agenda with Emmanouil Karalis, Kurtis Marschall and Sam Kendricks part of a strong field that is intent on pushing the bar higher.
Audrey Werro will have the hometown Swiss crowd behind her in the women’s 800m where she will line up against Femke Broeders-Bol, Georgia Hunter Bell and Jessica Hull in one of the final events of the program while the men’s 200m sees favorite Kenny Bednarek close out the day with Sinesipho Dambile, Andre De Grasse and José Figueroa set to challenge him through the turn in the dash to finish.
A loaded men’s 3,000m will be one of the ones to watch as Grant Fisher, Cam Myers, Parker Wolfe, Nico Young and Graham Blanks are certain to be in the mix on the bell lap while Faith Cherotich and Peruth Chemutai will create their own showdown in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase.
All eyes will be on the women’s 100m after Melissa Jefferson-Wooden eases into the event fresh off a close win last week in Silesia and is part of a stacked group with Sha’Carri Richardson, Julien Alfred, Amy Hunt, Tina Clayton and Zoe Hobbs set to declare that there is no favorite in this race.
Emma Zapletalová heads into the women’s 400m hurdles knowing that Dalilah Muhammad and Anna Cockrell have the closing speed to hold her off late in the race as Emmanuel Wanyonyi makes an appearance in the men’s 800m in a non-Diamond League event, but will likely uses his time on the track to tease a chance at a record.
The men’s long jump will push Miltiádis Tentóglou in position to leap higher — and farther — with hometown favorite Simon Ehammer along with Bozhidar Sarâboyukov set to play the role of spoiler while Rumesh Tharanga brings his world lead in the javelin to Zurich against Keshorn Walcott, Anderson Peters and Curtis Thompson.
