Fall major marathon season continues with the Chicago Marathon this Sunday but one big piece of the New York City Marathon has dropped and it’s the design of this year’s finisher medal.
New York Road Runners unveiled the medal design on social media on Thursday and participants at the final major of the year on November 2 will be sporting a medal that has a refreshed look and a very cool detail that will have to be seen — and held — to truly appreciate.
The medal is polished gold tone keepsake that sports diagonal streaks across the entire front which correspond to the outer edges of the object. But the most interesting feature is the outer edge is a depiction of the elevation profile of the race that can be felt. Using fingers to trace along a symbolic marker of the hills and bridges more than 55,000 participants tackled on race day is a gesture that will be repeated on Medal Monday and beyond.
The marathon logo is posted at the center of the medal and raised on a circular podium which is also raised and sits on top of the diagonal streaks that make up the background.
This year’s race will likely be another giant part the entire city can take part in along the course with stacked pro men’s and women’s field getting an extra boost as Eliud Kipchoge and Sifan announced that the will join the action on November 2.
