USA Track and Field revealed the roster of athletes on Tuesday that will head to Tokyo next week as part of Team USA’s World Athletics Championships squad.
The bulk of the team was chosen through podium finishes at last month’s outdoor national championships in Eugene, Oregon while defending world champions receive automatic byes for Tokyo. Meanwhile, the Diamond League Final in Zurich served as a final chance, of sorts, for those who did not fare as well in Eugene, with the Zurich meet also guaranteeing a slot at world championships.
“Following Team USA’s world-leading 29 medal performance in 2023, we are proud to send this incredible roster of athletes to Tokyo,” USATF CEO Max Siegel said in a statement. “We have increased our investment in high performance to levels never before seen by this organization and U.S. athletes have responded with performances that make us medal contenders in nearly every discipline.”
The World Athletics Championships kicks off next week at Japan National Stadium and will be the home for all of the action from September 13-21 as a lengthy season finally reaches its highest points.
Team USA will be anchored by numerous standout names, with Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Noah Lyles, Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, Valarie Allman, Chase Jackson, Kenny Bednarek, Sha’Carri Richardson and Rai Benjamin leading a loaded squad against the best in the world in what will mirror many of last summer’s Olympic matchups.
