Agnes Ngetich was simply dominant from the start at the NYRR Mastercard Mini 10K in New York on Saturday as she bolted to a course record 30:07 win in a stacked field in the all-women race.
Ngetich powered through humid morning conditions and took off instantly and ensured that there would be no large lead group contending in the closing stretches.
Before the race even reached the half mile mark, Ngetich was in control as the course kicked off on the road adjacent to Central Park before entering and covering a bulk of the main inner loop. A chase pack with Hellen Obiri, Weini Kelati, Isigie Gebreselama and Klara Lukan briefly maintained a tight formation but struggled to keep pace as Ngetich pressed forward.
As she entered the park around the first mile mark, the battle appeared to be out of reach for the chase group and at 5K, Ngetich was flying at 14:57 and seemed unbothered by the rolling hills.
With only the clock as her remaining challenge, Ngetich upped the pace and nearly grabbed the win under 30 minutes but fell just 8 second short. After the race she admitted that her bold start was not planned and part of her strategy was to make a move at the halfway point since she knew how competitive the field would be late in the action.
“It wasn’t my plan,” Ngetich said. “I was to move from 5k or 4k, but at 400 meters I was like ‘let me try to push’ and see who will follow me and we can fight together and push together as ladies.”
Gebreselama was second in 30:53 and Obiri finished third in 31:10.
In the wheelchair race, Tatyana McFadden reminded the field why she continues to come back to New York and thrive after surging to a 22:50 win in a margin by more than two minutes.
“The race was really good,” McFadden said during the local broadcast after the race. “It’s a fast course, and it’s hilly, so I like to just go out from the start and keep it ahead. It’s a great day to have a women’s race and it was an overall great day.”
Hannah Dederick was second in 25:24 and Hoda Elshorbagy took third in 25:44.
Race organizer New York Road Runners said that 10,084 women crossed the finish line, marking the first time the event pushed past the 10,000 participant mark. The event dates back to 1972 as the world’s first women-only road race with just 72 finishers in Central Park.
