London Marathon organizers announced the schedule for next year’s two-day landmark event on Wednesday, with elite men, men’s wheelchair racers and good for age men’s participants leading off the first day, while women will run the following day.
London Marathon Events said that world record holder Sabastian Sawe and Catherine Debrunner decided the order with a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors as 100,000 participants are expected to hit the streets of London on April 24 and 25, 2027.
“Splitting the elite races will allow us to shine an even brighter spotlight on the extraordinary athletes taking part,” Hugh Brasher, CEO of London Marathon Events said. “I’m particularly looking forward to the elite women’s start on Sunday, when, for the first time in London, female athletes in the Championship categories will line up behind the women’s elite field. Our outstanding elite women’s wheelchair field will begin the action just ahead of them, creating a true celebration of women’s marathon racing.”
After months of rumors that next year’s race would expand to a two-day event, organizers confirmed in June that the London Marathon would push beyond its major siblings and host a weekend of running that would essentially take over the city.
“The 2027 Double TCS London Marathon will be a momentous one-off event, and Sabastian and Catherine’s Rock, Paper, Scissors battle was an entertaining way to decide which day would host each elite race,” Brasher said. “We can now look forward to two spectacular days of elite racing, with the men opening the weekend on Saturday 24 April and the women launching the second day on Sunday 25 April. The competition may not be quite so friendly when race weekend arrives!”
Elite men’s wheelchair, elite men and men’s championships and good for age races will take place on Saturday, April 24, 2027 with a field of general runners, regardless of gender, will make up a mass group that will be spread over either day.
The following day, elite women’s wheelchair, elite women and women’s championships and good for age runners will take on the course.
Demand for the London Marathon continues to soar, with a record 1.33 million entering the 2027 ballot for an 18 percent jump over 2026 and over one million applicants from the United Kingdom, according to organizers in May.
That news came just a week after 59,830 people completed the 2026 race, setting a new world record and edging past the 2025 New York City Marathon’s 59,226 total finishers.
General ballot applicants for the 2027 London Marathon were notified in July if they were accepted into next year’s race and organizers said that the two-day format would be a one-time event as part of a push toward a new fundraising record.
