The Diamond League Shanghai opener delivered with a roar in Keqiao on Saturday as world leads dominated the night and seven new marks setting the stage for a competitive outdoor season.
Faith Kipyegon, Jessica Schilder, Peruth Chemutai, Mohamed Abdilaahi, Birke Haylom, Masai Russell and Alison dos Santos grabbed world leading marks to kick off the season as Mondo Duplantis, Shericka Jackson and Nickisha Pryce had commanding wins at Keqiao Stadium.
Kipyegon guided the world-leading charge with a 14:24.14 in the women’s 5,000m as she powered ahead of Likina Amebaw, who took second in 14:24.21 and Senayet Getachew’s 14:24.71 third place finish.
“A positive season opener,” Kipyegon said. “My main goal was to see where we are placed and where we can adjust and continue with the same spirit. I will not say I will go back to 1,500m more often — I’m going to continue to do both 1,500m and 5,000m. To start my season here was real nice.”
The world leads piled up as Jessica Schilder hurled a 21.09m in the women’s shot put, Peruth Chemutai soared with a 8:51.47 in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase and Alison dos Santos bolted to a 33.01 in the men’s 300m hurdles.
Meanwhile Birke Haylom took the world lead in the women’s 1,500m in 3:55.56, Mohamed Abdilaahi clocked a 7:25.77 in the men’s 3,000m and Masai Russell closed the meet with a 12.25 in the women’s 100m hurdles — for the seventh world lead of the day.
“I was not coming here to place second or third,” Russell said. “My only mindset was to win. During the competiton, I just proceeded to shut out the noise, focus on what I could control. It was truly a dream come true. The gold medal tonight was just the beginning of the new season.”
Duplantis was solid in the men’s pole vault as he leaped to a 6.12m meet record for the win over Kurtis Marschall, who took second in 5.80m and Thibaut Collet’s 5.70m third place finish. Duplantis flirted with jumping 6.32m and breaking his own world record but settled for the win and was unable to clear the new height.
“The 6.12m jump was good,” Duplantis said. I’m glad that I was able to take the meeting record. That was the main goal. The attempt at the world record were okay, but we will take some better ones here next year.”
Gift Leotlela pulled off a 9.97 stunner in the men’s 100m, as he edged past Ferdinand Omanyala (9.98) and Kenny Bednarek (9.98), who took second and third in a loaded group that also included Christian Coleman (10.01) and Letsile Tebogo (10.12).
Shericka Jackson cruised to a 22.07 victory in the women’s 200m over Shaunae Miller-Uibo (22.26) and Anavia Battle (22.40) while fellow Jamaican Nickisha Pryce took the women’s 400m in 49.75 as Aaliyah Butler got second in 49.78 and Roxana Gomez was third in 50.24.
The series remains in China but shifts to Xiamen for the second meeting of the year on May 23 at Xiamen Egret Stadium in Fujian Province.
