The intensity stayed high on Sunday in Rabat as the third Diamond League meeting delivered a major dose of meet records, world leads and even upsets as Soufiane El Bakkali surged to a world lead in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase and Max Burgin pulled off a stunner over Emmanuel Wanyonyi.
El Bakkali pulled in all of the support from the home crowd packed into Rabat Olympic Stadium as he bolted to a 7:57.25 win the men’s 3,000m steeplechase over Frederik Ruppert who took second in 7:57.80 and Simon Kiprop Koech 7:59.44 as all three finished under eight minutes.
“Attending Rabat meeting in my home soil is always great and what makes it greater this year is the attendance of His Highness our Prince Moulay El Hassan,” El Bakkali said. “His attendance was a a big motivator for me and I would like to thank him so much for his presence.”
But in the men’s 800m, Burgin saw his moment and seized it in a 1:42.98 upset over Wanyonyi who tried to close in on him in the final moments of the second lap. Wanyonyi was second in 1:43.56 and Slimane Moula finished third in 1:43.73.
