The Diamond League season roars past the halfway point as it touches down in Eugene this weekend for its only meeting in the United States, with a loaded lineup at the Prefontaine Classic on Friday and Saturday.
Two days of action at Hayward Field means many of the world’s top talents in the sport are set to clash in what will feel like a world championship atmosphere in an event that has routinely delivered world record performances as this year’s campaign on the track and in the field pushes through the summer.
With plenty to watch at the ninth showcase on the calendar, the women’s 100m showdown looks to be an all out battle between Melissa Jefferson-Wooden and Sha’Carri Richardson certain to roll into the final as the remaining spots will have to be divided among the field of 18 competitors.
On the men’s side of the event, Trayvon Bromell is riding the high of his statement win over Noah Lyles in Paris last week and will face a familiar lineup that includes Christian Coleman, Oblique Seville, Gift Leotlela and a surging Kenny Bednarek.
In the men’s 200m, Letsile Tebogo takes on Makanakaishe Charamba and Zharnel Hughes, while the men’s 400m podium could land in possession of Rai Benjamin, Khaleb McRae, Collen Kebinatshipi or Jacory Patterson.
Masai Russell is positioned to take even more time off of the 12.14 world lead she grabbed in the women’s 100m hurdles in May in Xiamen, as Ja’Kobe Tharp brings the momentum of his 12.75 world record at the NCAA Division I championships in the men’s 110m last month to Hayward with Jamal Britt, Dylan Beard and Cordell Tinch all lining up alongside him on Saturday.
The intensity in Eugene extends beyond the sprints and the men’s Bowerman Mile is packed as Cole Hocker, Hobbs Kessler, Yared Nuguse, Timothy Cheruiyot and Cam Myers lead a deep field, while the women’s 3,000m steeplechase sees Winfred Yavi, Emma Coburn and Doris Lemngole will likely go down to a late kick on the bell lap.
Faith Kipyegon will be a favorite in the women’s mile and a world record threat as Nikki Hiltz, Jessica Hull, Georgia Hunter Bell and Birke Haylom look to push the pace, while Keely Hodgkinson looks to shift the women’s 800m narrative back in her direction against Addison Wiley, Raevyn Rogers and Anaïs Bourgoin.
Joe Kovacs leads the way in the men’s shot put and faces a field that includes Tom Walsh, Rajindra Campbell, Leonardo Fabbri and Jordan Geist as Tara Davis-Woodhall is set to maintain her women’s long jump reign against Larissa Iapichino, Malaika Mihambo, Alyssa Jones and Alexis Brown.
