Records are meant to be set — and broken — so by the end of the London Marathon on April 27, the world record for the largest ever marathon set on Sunday at the Paris Marathon might be a thing of the past (again).
But for now, the record stands as 56,950 participants hit the streets of Paris and put the race back on top of the largest marathons ever, taking the title from last September's Berlin Marathon — with 54,154. Less than two months later, the New York City Marathon grabbed the crown as 55,646 participants crossed the finish line..
Meanwhile, Sunday's race was pure celebration. And while Paris isn't part of the marathon majors roster, it put up major race number. Benard Biwott won the men’s division in his marathon debut in 2:05:25 and Bedatu Hirpa cruised to a 2:20:45 finish.
Now onward to Boston and London.
