A shift from the track to outside of the arena makes its arrival this weekend in Copenhagen at the 2026 World Athletics Road Running Championships as a marquee of names of distance take the baton from sprints and field events.
Two days of action will see titles awarded in the mile, 5k and half marathon as Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Agnes Ngetich, Joshua Cheptegei, Likina Amebaw, Yared Nuguse and Freweyni Hailu are among the headliners all competing for global titles has the summer months make way for a fall of distance racing.
The competition will be integrated into this year’s Copenhagen Half Marathon, with around 45,000 participants expected to take on Sunday’s race alongside the championships.
Meanwhile, the action begins on Saturday with the women’s mile as Freweyni Hailu, Addison Wiley, Sarah Billings and Agathe Guillemot leading a deep — and crowded — field after they spent the past two weeks battling through the remainder of the track season at the Diamond League final and Ultimate Championship.
On the men’s side in the road mile, Yared Nuguse is certainly one to watch as a favorite, but he will face considerable obstacles along the course in the form of Olli Hoare, Jake Heyward and Vincent Ciattei. Nuguse races barely a week after placing fifth in the men’s 1,500m at the Ultimate Championship in Budapest while Hoare arrives from New York after competing in the 5th Avenue Mile last Sunday.
They will take on a group that also features Jack Anstey, Samuel Tanner, Tshepo Tshite and Andrew Coscoran in a race that will come down to who will be the first to strike away from the field and if that move comes too early or just in time to win the championship.
Likina Amebaw rides the wave of her win at the Ultimate Championship into Copenhagen for the women’s 5k on Saturday as having the largest target on her back in a lineup where she will face Caroline Nyaga, Aleshign Baweke, Caroline Gitonga and Diane van Es.
The men’s 5k could be another moment of peaking at the right time for Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who has bounced back from injury this year to finding his way to victory in some of the biggest moments of the season. Like others competing this weekend, Ingebrigtsen will be on short rest after appearing in Budepest and taking the win in the 5k and hits the road against a group that will feature reigning world 10,000m champion Jimmy Gressier, Addisu Yihune, Dominic Lokinyomo Lobalu and Mezgebu Sime.
On Sunday, the action shifts to the half marathon as Agnes Ngetich locks in on another world title after kicking off the year in January at the World Cross Country Championships with a win in Tallahassee. Ngetich will be joined by Tsigie Gebreselama, Daisilah Jerono, Ftaw Zeray, Lilian Kasait Rengeruk along with a deep American squad that includes Weini Kelati, Jess McClain, Emma Grace Hurley and Ednah Kurgat.
Whether Ngetich decides to start strong and pull away from the field early or rely on a late kick comes down to who will take that decision out of her strategy and take control of the race.
In the men’s half marathon, Joshua Cheptegei will have to work through a competitive group that is considerably strong in a race that will come down to its final moments. Nicholas Kipkorir, Daniel Ebenyo, Tadese Worku, Gideon Rono, Andreas Almgren and Nicholas Kipkorir will all be factors alongside Cheptegei, who brings his Olympic 10,000m champion and world title credentials into Copenhagen as a possible favorite.
