Two runners died after suffering “medical emergencies” during the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon in downtown Indianapolis on Saturday.

According to Beyond Monumental, the organizer of the race, the runners suffered “unrelated medical emergencies” and were later taken to local hospitals.

“Our on-site medical team and local first responders provided immediate, coordinated care,” a statement from organizers said. “We are working closely with medical and public safety officials and will continue to offer our full support.”

Information about the runners was not disclosed by race organizers.

“Participant safety is our top priority, and we are profoundly grateful to the medical professionals and emergency personnel who responded with such care and professionalism,” organizers also said in the statement.

The race, which launched in 2008, welcomed more than 6,600 participants as Austin Nolan won the men’s race in 2:16:30, while Lindsey Bradley set a new course record in the women’s field to win in 2:31:46.
