Shewarge Alene, who won the Stockholm Marathon in May, died on Wednesday after feeling ill during a training run near Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, according to published reports. She was 30.
Alene collapsed and was rushed to a hospital shortly after but doctors were unable to revive her.
A cause of death was not announced.
Stockholm Marathon officials released a statement on Friday confirming that Alene died after a workout.
“It is with deep sorrow that we have received the news of the passing of Shewarge Alene, winner of adidas Stockholm Marathon 2025. Shewarge Alene became unwell during a training session and was taken to hospital, where sadly, her life could not be saved. Shewarge Alene was 30 years old. Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones.”
Alene’s last win came in Stockholm on May 31 in 2:30:38 and she held a personal best of 2:27:26 at the Cape Town Marathon in 2023. She competed professionally over the past 14 years, winning 12 races over that period.
