Shericka Jackson pulls out of 200m at Paris Olympics

Shericka Jackson will not run the women’s 200m at the Paris Olympics due to injury.

Team Jamaica made the announcement on social media on Sunday shortly before the qualifying round.

The news of Jackson not competing in the 200m means she will not be in the mix for any individual medals in Paris follows her decision to withdraw from the 100m days ago to focus on other events.

She later mentioned that her goal was to put her efforts into the 200m.

“It’s a combination of a lot of stuff,” Jackson said. “And I made that decision not to contest the 100m and focus only on the 200, and I think we’re pretty happy with that.

With Jackson out of the 200m qualifying, American Gabby Thomas appears to be the favorite for the gold. Thomas and Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred both cruised into the semifinal after qualifying in the Sunday morning session.

Meanwhile the dominance of Team Jamaica won’t be a factor in another sprint final. Minutes before the 100m semifinal on Saturday, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was a late scratch due to injury, which she later addressed on social media. Elaine Thompson-Herah, who captured gold in the 100 and 200m in Tokyo, suffered an Achilles tendon injury in June and did not compete in trials.
