Quincy Wilson continued to pick off targets in the national record books with a commanding 45.66 in the 400m at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix on Sunday.
Wilson, 17, is a junior phenom from Bullis School in Maryland and notched a personal best in the 400m, while breaking the previous high school record — which he set — and claimed the U18 indoor world record.
“Honestly the track and the environment here is amazing,” Wilson said after the race. “Coming here and running on the New Balance track is the best thing. Every time I come here, I run a new National Record. I love the track, I love the environment, I’m just blessed to be out here today.”
Despite facing a lineup of seasoned sprinters, Wilson was in control through the final turn and crossed the line to a roar of cheers from the packed crowd in the stands. Will Sumner was second in 46.27, while Jereem Richards finished third in 46.49 and Zakithi Nene too the final spot in 46.56.
Nene surged to the lead in the early portion of the race as the rest of the field adjusted while Wilson trailed briefly. At the final turn on the second lap, Wilson used the outside lane to overtake Richards and Nene. He powered through the final 100m and etched his name in the record books again.
“It’s never gets old,” Wilson said about setting new records as he prepares for the Millrose Games at The Armory in New York on Feb 8. “I’m ready to get another one tomorrow. Everything on the east coast — the best tracks. Any place on the east coast is a place where you can break records.”
