USA Track and Field confirmed on Friday that the New York Grand Prix is canceled and takes a popular meet off of the schedule of a busy outdoor season.
The event was originally planned for June 21 and would have been held at Icahn Stadium.
In a statement, USATF did not provide a reason for the cancellation, but expressed “disappointed” the removal of the meet would mean one less stop for athletes building toward national and world competitions.
“While USATF does not organize this event, we understand the impact this change may have on athletes seeking critical opportunities to compete, earn prize money and gain world-ranking points,” the statement said. “Our domestic calendar is strategically designed with depth and flexibility, ensuring that elite athletes have consistent, high-quality, competitive platforms throughout the season.”
New York Grand Prix has typically drawn large crowds and recent standouts like Noah Lyles, Gabby Thomas, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Tara Davis-Woodhall.
But the 2025 indoor — and outdoor seasons — have already revealed multiple schedule conflicts, with the ongoing Diamond League season crossing over the inaugural Grand Slam Track campaign. The new league, backed by sprint legend Michael Johnson, finishes its four-meet season on June 27-29, a week after the planned June 21 date for New York Grand Prix.
Meanwhile, the Diamond League Paris stop is on June 20.
“USATF remains committed to supporting elite athletes by actively securing viable alternatives and will continue working with our partners to maximize opportunities across the US track and field landscape.” USATF said in its statement. “We are confident in the strength of and the opportunities in the 2025 outdoor season and remain focused on helping our athletes prepare for global success.”
The remainder of high profile meets in the United States like the Prefontaine Classic on July 5 and Outdoor Championships beginning on July 31 — both in Oregon — will be unaffected by the cancellation. But by late Friday, the New York Grand Prix still appeared on USATF’s website calendar.
The New York Grand Prix debuted in 2005 and was part of the IAAF Grand Prix from 2007 to 2009 when it was branded as the Reebok Grand Prix.
But the event has undergone several changes since its first edition. In 2010, as the Adidas Grand Prix, it was a fixture on the Diamond League circuit until 2015, but dropped in 2016 in favor of the Adidas Boost Boston Games and not replaced.
But in 2022, the event returned as the New York Grand Prix and included as a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meet.
