Karissa Schweizer will be on hand to defend her title and Yared Nuguse will add a jolt of power to the men’s field as the 5th Avenue Mile pro lineup was unveiled on Wednesday heading in to Sunday’s race on September 7 in New York.
The race, a fast 20 block sprint down a section of Museum Mile, will feature 11 Olympians who will help usher in the fall road racing season and take part of an event that will also include over 8,500 runners.
Nuguse leads the way in a loaded men’s field that includes Hobbs Kessler, Josh Hoey, Cooper Teare and Parker Wolfe. For Nuguse, the course record is likely in his sights as he looks to break the 3:44.3 set last year by Josh Kerr.
“I’m excited to be making my New York Road Runners and New Balance 5th Avenue Mile race debut to close out my 2025 season,” Nuguse said in a statement. “I’ll be drawing on the energy of the New York City crowds to get me down Fifth Avenue as quickly as possible and to come out on top.”
But it won’t be an easy trip down 5th Avenue for Nuguse. Hoey finished second in last year’s race and will have a solid formula in place on Sunday with a gold medal in the 800m at the World Indoor Championships in March as proof that he has the speed in place. Meanwhile, Kessler has Olympic experience, Teare is a two-time national champion in the 1,500m and Wolfe won the 2024 NCAA championship in the 5,000m.
In the women’s race, Schweizer will have the benefit of last year’s win on her side against a field that is packed with talent as Ajee’ Wilson, Raevyn Rogers, Heather MacLean, Valerie Constien and Allie Wilson are all ready to leave New York with the title.
“I had an amazing time racing my first-ever New Balance 5th Avenue Mile last year,” Schweizer said in a statement. “I came so close to beating the course record, so I’m excited to be coming back to take another crack at that record.“
Ajee’ Wilson won the 2022 World Indoor championship in the 800m, Rogers has a bronze the 800m from the 2020 Olympics and MacLean who holds the American indoor record in the 1,500m. Constien, the brings a pair of Olympic stints to the race while Allie Wilson got her first exposure at the Olympics in Paris last year.
