Apple is looking to expand its Fitness+ workout franchise and could begin offering live content in an updated version of the service.
The company posted job listing for an in-person studio producer with experience in multi-camera and live or live-to-tape production, which suggests that a revamped platform is on the way.
In the listing, which was posted on July 24, Apple said that it is the role will be filled by someone who is a “creative collaborator who’s excited to experiment with new formats, push the boundaries of what live fitness content can be” without specifying if that means helping build the structure of daily live broadcasts like Peloton.
The role would be based in Santa Monica, California where current Fitness+ productions are recorded for the on-demand service and a new live platform would not be the first time Apple has built a large scale realtime content hub.
Apple launched a live music platform in 2015 under the Beats 1 name with on-air personalities before rebranding as Apple Music 1 in 2020 and broadening its offerings to include Apple Music Hits, Apple Music Country, Apple Music Club and several other live stations.
A switch to live studio session would position Apple directly against Peloton which offers cycling, running, treadmill, strength, yoga, Pilates, barre and row classes with a deep roster of popular trainers.
The current version of Apple Fitness+ debuted in late December 2020 with recorded segments inside the Apple Fitness app that includes HIIT, strength, yoga, dance, core, cycling, treadmill, rowing and Mindful Cooldown session with its own group of on screen trainers who guide users through each movement.
But a pivot to live content would also mean that Apple and Peloton would offer closely competing services since Spotify now features more than 1,400 on-demand Peloton classes inside of its fitness hub in a move that was first announced in April. And while the full slate of Peloton’s main offerings from its own platform are not on Spotify, the growing content in the fitness club debuted with running, strength, cardio, yoga and meditation options.
