Yared Nuguse is making his way back to The Armory with his sights set on a fourth straight at Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games on February 1.
Nuguse was announced on Tuesday as part of a men’s mile field that will be headlined by Hobbs Kessler and Cameron Myers, who took second and third earlier in the year in New York City.
“I’m very excited to be back at Millrose,” Nuguse said in a statement. “I always run a great race there and I’m looking forward to having another great performance. With any luck I’ll continue my winning streak!”
Nuguse was electric in last February’s race in a stunner as he clocked a 3:46.63 indoor mile world record performance that rocked The Armory. With possible fourth straight win in the cards, Nuguse is entering rare territory for the event. He is inching closer to Bernard Lagat won six straight Wanamaker Mile races between 2005 and 2010 — and eight in total.
However, nearly a week after Nuguse broke the indoor mile record, Jakob Ingebrigtsen shattered the mark in 3:45.14 in Lievin, France.
Meanwhile, Kessler and Myers are ready to upgrade their podium positions from this year’s race and will push Nuguse — and the pace — on a track that continues to field record performances.
Kessler is a two-time national champion, world indoor bronze medalist, world title holder in the road mile and brings Olympic experience into this latest showdown. Myers, at 19, has quickly built up a reputation that has place him at the world stage. he is the world junior record holder, Australian national champion and is the second-youngest athlete to break four minutes in the mile.
“Last year was a race for the ages with Yared setting a new World Record and leading eight men under 3:50 for the mile at our amazing venue,” Millrose Games meet rirector Ray Flynn said. “I’m certain that the NYRR Wanamaker Mile at the 118th Millrose Games will be another epic race!”
