Noah Lyles will end his season prematurely due to a setback he suffered while recovering from an injury that dates back to the USATF Outdoor Nationals in New York in July.
In a video posted on social media on Friday, Lyles said he discussed the matter with his coach and decided to focus on building back up for 2027 and not compete at next week’s Ultimate championship in Budapest. He will still attend as part of the event’s festivities.
“After running at USAs, we found out that I had a small strain, not very serious, and the rehab that we were putting together was going extremely well,” Lyles said. “Unfortunately, because of the strain, it caused some other things to flare up, and it’s made it hard for me to continue practicing. We decided that we’ll just end the season here, get ready for 2027, 2028, which are going to be humongous years.”
During the men’s 200m final in July, Lyles pulled up abruptly on the turn and did not finish the race and appeared to injure his hamstring. He did not specify the exact ailment and what was the nature of the additional issue that ultimately led his team to shut down his season.
Lyles was set to have major roles in next week’s Ultimate Championship on and off the track.
Aside from the competition, he added his input in the design of the winner trophies, which were unveiled on Tuesday and are meant to replace traditional medals. The star-shaped trophies are carved from stone and accompanied by an adjustable bracelet that can be worn on the wrist or be attached near the base of the award.
Meanwhile, Lyles is listed as the event’s creative adviser and is also the “Ultimate MC,” as he lends his star power to the hype of the competition. An athlete party is also scheduled and will be hosted by Lyles.
There will still be many marquee names in Budapest but Lyles is the latest athlete to pull out after Nadia Battocletti declined her invitation, Beatrice Chebet and Sydney Levrone are both on maternity leave following the birth of their first children and Faith Kipyegon is recovering from injury.
