The sixth Diamond League meeting of the season roared into Oslo on Wednesday as the Bislett Games got a taste of what the rest of the year has in store.
Teen phenom Cooper Lutkenhaus narrowly beat out Emmanuel Wanyoni as he grabbed a 1:42.08 photo finish world lead in the men’s 800m in a loaded group that came down to a result that was too close to call.
“It was a very tough race and I had to dive for the line to be sure of the win,” Lutkenhaus said. “I knew he was on my shoulder and I was willing the line to come towards me. To beat the Olympic champion is awesome and it means a lot. I have not seen the grazes yet from my dive but I think they will hurt in the shower later.”
Wanyoni was a narrow second in 1:42.09 while Marco Arop took third in 1:43.33.
In the women’s 3,000, Freweyni Hailu made sure she was also in on the world leading action and soared to 8:24.22 win over Likina Amebaw (8:25.15) and Senayet Getachew (8:25.85).
“This time is very good and I am glad for this result,” Hailu said. “The weather did not affect me, I think it is normal to race in any conditions. I take it step by step. This was an important race but the main one will come later. I am satisfied with how I felt in this run and also with my tactics.”
Another world lead came courtesy of Addisu Yihune, who needed a late surge to win the men’s 5,000m in 12:47.62 over Birhanu Balew (12:47.73) and Andreas Almgren (12:48.61).
Julien Alfred cruised to a 10.76 in the women’s 100m as she coasted for the victory ahead of Amy Hunt (10.99) and Zoe Hobbs (11.03).
“I am healthy and I am happy to get the win here. I would say I am trusting myself a lot more,” Alfred said, “And I am having so much more fun. Before I came here, my mental coach said to me: when you be yourself, it is the most powerful thing that you can do. And I think I learn more and more from my experiences. As long as I come in the finish healthy, I am happy about it.”
In the men’s mile, Timothy Cheruiyot took the win in 3:48.21 over Yared Nuguse (3:48.21) and Cam Myers (3:48.35), while Emma Zapletalova took the women’s 400m hurdles in 53.13 past Rushell Clayton (53.50) and Jasmine Jones (54.09).
Letsile Tebogo rocketed to a 19.84 win to take the men’s 200m from Sinesipho Dambile (20.12) and Jereem Richards (20.50) as Chase Jackson took the women’s shot put with a 20.74m distance over Jessica Schilder (20.11m) and Sarah Mitton (19.89m), while Kurtis Marschall rode the momentum of his win over Mondo Duplantis in Stockholm and grabbed the men’s pole vault in Oslo with a 5.82m best height over Sondre Guttormsen (5.72m) and Sam Kendricks (5.72m).
Alison dos Santos closed the meet with a 46.89 victory in the men’s 400m hurdles over Karsten Warholm (47.40) and Caleb Dean (48.22).
