When the Los Angeles Olympics kicks off in July 2028, track and field will be the opening attraction as the entire women’s 100m event — including the finals — will be on display on day one.
Organizers of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games released the full schedule on Wednesday, as track and field will cover the entire two week period of the event, while swimming will also see adjustments to its traditional format. The marathon will once again kick off the final day of competition.
The women’s 100m — all three rounds including the final — will take place on the first day of competition on July 15. The men’s 10,000m and women’s shot put finals will also be staged the same day.
The change is the first time track and field will stretch the entire schedule of the the Olympics. At last year’s Paris Games the second week was dominated by event at Stade Paris, along with the men’s and women’s marathon wrapping up the final two days of action.
“This is Olympic innovation at its best,” Shana Ferguson, LA28 Chief of Sport and Games Delivery Officer said in a statement. “By collaborating with World Athletics and listening directly to their athlete community, we’ve created something unprecedented with the women’s 100m. We are thrilled to showcase the fastest women in the world on day one, allowing them to inspire a global audience at the start of the most comprehensive Olympic sport program in history.”
A revamped repechage period will be implemented to give athletes better recovery time for those who have failed to advance in qualifying but still have a second chance to advance. The mixed 4x100m relay will debut in Los Angeles Olympic between the 100m and 200m.
“Track and field is having its moment, and the road to LA28 is about to be something special, especially for the women’s sprints,” Sha’Carri Richardson said in a statement. “The talent, energy and competition — it’s all going to shine. Just look at day one of the LA Games. I’m locked in on accomplishing some personal goals and doing my part to help the sport keep growing and inspiring the next generation at home in the USA and across the globe.”
An Olympic-record 51 sports will be on display during the two-week event from July 14-30, 2028 with the opening ceremony taking place at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium.
“Super Saturday,” before the last day of competition, will be packed with more finals than another day, with 23 finals in 25 sports including basketball, soccer, swimming, beach volleyball, softball, weightlifting — and the women’s marathon.
