On Sunday Eliud Kipchoge likely closed the book on a career of running world majors after completing the New York City Marathon.
And while he finished in 17th place in New York, Kipchoge is ready for his next challenge and shortly after Sunday’s race he announced Eliud’s Running World, which will see him complete seven marathons on seven continents over two years, to raise funds for his foundation and include fans to join him on the ride.
“With this World Tour, I want to compete not only for records, but for the people,” Kipchoge said in a post on social media. “I want to continue to push myself to run at my best but I also want to inspire, give back, and remind everyone that no human is limited in every corner of the world. I believe that we can all come together and become a better world.”
In the days before Sunday’s marathon there were some rumors that Kipchoge would announce his retirement from competitive running. And while he did not confirm that he would step away from races like the marathon majors — which he has won 11 — Kipchoge seems to now be locked in on events that focus on the experience for his fans.
Dates and exact locations of the marathons Kipchoge plans to run on his continental tour have yet to be revealed, but proceeds from the event will benefit the Eliud Kipchoge Foundation, which he launched in 2020. The foundation is dedicated to raising $1 million to support of education and environmental causes.
The marathon stops will feature initiatives that help local projects in each city.
