As the busy outdoor track and field season surges on, just a handful of Diamond League meets remain with world championships in Tokyo in full view.

The action shifts to Silesia on Saturday as final tuneups for September’s world stage await some as others still hope to punch their tickets to Japan via wild card qualifiers.

And with the Diamond League Final in Zurich coming later in the month, points are still up for grabs as some storylines get their next chapters. In the very least, Saturday’s meet is a preview of how the biggest event in the sport this year could play out at world championships.

Men’s 100m
By default, the men’s 100m will feature an extra layer of intensity following the drama between Noah Lyles and Kenny Bednarek following the 200m final at the USATF Outdoor Championships in Eugene earlier in the month. The next phase of this matchup will easily deliver as Kishane Thompson, Christian Coleman and Trayvon Bromell are all in the mix and locked in on podium finishes — and not what the possible tension is on the menu with Lyles and Bednarek. Thompson’s 9.75 is the world lead in 2025 and a big enough beacon to remind everyone at the start line what the standard looks like to measure up to this year — now that his silver at the Paris Olympics is in the rear view.

Women’s 100m
A stellar season by Melissa Jefferson-Wooden shifts to Silesia in the women’s 100m as she continues to craft the handbook on how to assemble a near-flawless year. Sha’Carri Richardson is still the reigning world champion — and has a bye into Tokyo —but will need pure execution to decode Jefferson-Wooden’s strategy of quick starts out of the blocks and raw execution to the line. Richardson failed to make the women’s 200m final in Eugene, so the 100m is her sole focus. Aleia Hobbs, Marie-Josée Ta Lou-Smith, Jacious Sears and sisters Tina and Tia Clayton help round out the rest of the field on Saturday.

Men’s 1,500m
In what will be a closely watched race, Yared Nuguse will need to be in prime form if he hopes to navigate the slightly more complicated road to world championships. Nuguse’s 3:31 in Eugene was only good for fifth place — and had him on the outside looking in on Team USA’s Tokyo-bound squad. A win in Silesia would keep him in the mix as he could move on to Zurich, win there and be the fourth member of the U.S. men’s 1,500m crew with a victory. Step one is to dominate on Saturday. No Jakob Ingebrigtsen in Silesia makes things for Nuguse slightly less tense, but Timothy Cheruiyot, Festus Lagat and Josh Hoey will refuse to be bystanders with a win on the table.
