Christian Coleman was arrested alongside Sha’Carri Richardson during a traffic stop on Florida State Road in 429 in Winter Garden, Florida on Thursday after deputies said the vehicle driven by Richardson topped speeds of 100 miles per hour.
Coleman was charged with possessing drug paraphernalia and resisting and was taken into custody.
Officers said Coleman approached the traffic stop in a separate vehicle, was instructed to go back and as he walked away he tossed an item in the nearby grass.
The officer on the scene said Coleman refused to comply with their orders to stay away from the traffic stop, refused to provide identification and was later arrested.
In previous published reports, only details of Richardson’s traffic stop were initially made public.
She was charged with being in violation of Florida’s Dangerous Excessive Speeding Law, which comes with stiffer penalties for motorists driving 50 miles per hour or more over the speed limit or reaching more than 100 miles per hour. Drivers in violation of the law face immediate arrest, vehicle impoundment and penalties.
Richardson was taken into custody and seen on body camera footage asking the officer on the scene to not arrest her and said her back tire was underinflated — the reason for her excessive speed.
As Coleman approached, Richardson told the officer he was her boyfriend.
After Coleman was placed under arrest for resisting, a “glass smoking device” was seen in his vehicle and a small amount of marijuana was believed to be inside. Additional officers were requested at the scene as Coleman and Richardson were both taken into custody and their vehicles were towed from the scene.
Coleman later posted $1,000 bond — $500 for each charge.
The couple were involved an incident last August when Richardson was arrested and charged with domestic assault at Seattle Tacoma International Airport after being seen by a security officer striking Coleman. Surveillance footage also showed them in a verbal argument near a security checkpoint and Richard shoved and struck Coleman several times as he appeared to attempt to walk away.
Richard later issued a public apology to Coleman.
