  • Aynalem Desta and Geoffrey Toroitich return to defend their titles in Amsterdam on Sunday.
  • The men's field has just eleven competitors who have run under 2:05.
  • Desta will face a women's group that includes Meseret Belete, Mestawut Fikir and Buze Diriba.

The fall marathon road campaign pivots to The Netherlands this weekend as Geoffrey Toroitich and Aynalem Desta head into Sunday’s Amsterdam Marathon locked in on course records and defending their titles.

Toroitich powered his way to a 2:03:30 personal best victory in last year’s race after shifting gears late and making his move near the 35km point as he soared to the finish line. He looks to end the season back at the top podium spot and comes into Amsterdam riding the confidence built up from his 2:03:37 second place finish at the Tokyo Marathon in March.

Now in his second full year competing at marathon distance, Toroitich is confident he can reclaim his spark for a second straight year on the course in the Dutch city.

“I’m very proud of my victory in Amsterdam last year and of the course record. It changed my life and the lives of my family,” Kipchumba said. “I’m aiming for another personal best and the victory.”

Toroitich will face off against a men’s group that includes Haymanot Alew, Tsegaye Getachew, Lemi Berhanu, Maru Teferi and. Stephen Kissa

Meanwhile, Desta will look to build on her own 2:17:37 personal best from last year’s race as she surged to victory and will need to hold off a women’s group featuring Meseret Belete, Mestawut Fikir, Buze Diriba, Desi Jisa Mokonin and Yeshi Kalayu Chekole.

“I love the TCS Amsterdam Marathon,” Desta said. “I’m happy with the race I ran here last year, and I want to perform even better this year.”
