After navigating a long season (indoor and outdoor) that saw him grab the indoor mile world record briefly, join the entire Paris Olympics men’s 1,500m podium at Grand Slam Track’s inaugural season and fall just short of making it to world championships in Tokyo — Yared Nuguse just wanted to close his campaign with win.

He pulled off the feat, with a commanding win in the men’s race at the Fifth Avenue Mile in New York City in 3:47.7 on September 7 and felt relief, in a sense.

Photographer Justin Sorensen recalls the moment he watched Nuguse soar through the line, address the media and even trot through a victory lap to crowds of excited fans.
