Way Over the Line: The Boston Marathon’s Photo Bridge

From a vantage point that rivals riding in the back of the media truck on race day, the photo bridge is a castle guardtower of sorts that looms over the finish line in plain sight — with none of the fanfare that's occurring down below.

Still, so many of the winning moments, down to the wire finishes and victory laps have been etched through the lens of photographers fortunate enough to be selected to create just above the point where new champions are crowned.

Adrian Umpierrez spent the bulk of his day nestled in position on the photo bridge at the 129th Boston Marathon on April 21, capturing the record performances by John Korir and Sharon Lokedi, while waiting for the final finishers to bask in a piece of earned glory. His shots below are a glimpse of why distance runners continue to hold the prestige of Boston in high regard.

The vantage point of the photo bridge is crucial and provides raised — mostly clear — sightlines leading directly to the finish while photographers below gather to capture the first finishers at street level.

John Korir’s commanding 2:04:45 win was preceded by a fall early in the race and his bib came lose. He crossed the line with the bib in his hand with a minute to spare between him and second place.

The broadcast team also settled into one of the levels of the photo bridge as Maria Stephanos, Ed Harding and Hannah Storm led WCVB’s live coverage.

Irine Cheptai finished the women’s race in fourth place in 2:21:32 in what felt like a distant time from the top three finishers but this year’s Boston Marathon produced quicker times in the top five finishers in both pro fields for the race.

The Boston Marathon is typically held on a Monday, unlike most marathons which are usually staged on Sundays. The third Monday in April is Patriots’ Day in Boston, a state holiday commemorating the start of the American Revolutionary War at Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775.

For Sharon Lokedi, the final stretch down Boylston Street likely felt cavernous en route to her win — and her move on Hellen Obiri just after the mile 25 mark proved to be the deciding factor.

As the elites crossed the finish, the ton of the race shifted to the emotion of Boston qualifiers like Mitchi Paul who braved a grueling course and time cutoffs to even make the ranks of the general field.

As the day wore on, the final finishers made their way down streets that were largely empty and being cleaned in time for the city to revert back to normal. But each of the last finishers would be greeted warmly by race officials at the line.
