Finish Line Diaries: Personal Bests in a 26.2-Mile Victory Lap

From the elites leading the way to the festive conclusion of a long trek for the final finishers, the 2024 New York City Marathon is a welcome excuse to become its own annual Super Bowl of running — during an action-packed week.

And with more than 2 million spectators lining the course, the record 55,646 finishers trekking the five borough snapped Berlin's short-lived 54,280 mark that was set in September.

Along the final 5k stretch of Sunday's race, an uphill tour to Central Park, back to the streets and then a return to the park for the final 800m was raucous in celebration. But the energy pouring from both sides of the street was the right combination of mental fuel and togetherness that propelled each runner through the year's last major.
A season of bright orange ponchos — and medals — marked the end of a journey that began for the runners in the start village on Staten Island.
Along Fifth Avenue, a hand cyclist navigates the final stretch of the race with just three miles of the course remaining.
Thousands of signs were the part of the effort on the sidewalks to help bring the runners one step closer to the finish line.
Conditions on race day were ideal for running after temperatures well into the 70s warmed the city up unseasonably in November.
At the finish line there was a chorus of relief, excitement, agony for some and the quest to plan for next year’s race.
One of many medals and poses that would be on full display days (and weeks) after the race came to a conclusion.
A runner powered by the might of his costume playfully glides through the closing miles of the race.
The proof of completing the race came in the small take-home version of the medal and a much larger counterpart.
With just over three miles remaining, Fifth Avenue becomes an uphill grind as most of the last of the course is far from fast and flat.
Endless of racks of medals await the finishers who were eager to add another marathon to their distance running portfolios.
