World Athletics ratified a new batch of world marks on Wednesday as Mondo Duplantis, Mykolas Alekna and Beatrice Chebet saw their marks officially entered into the record books, following standout performances from April to August.
Alekna set a pair of new records in the men’s discus at the Oklahoma Throws Series World Invitational in Ramona, Oklahoma on April 13, tossing a 74.89m distance on his first throw and later improving that mark with a 75.56m on the fourth attempt. For Alekna, the meet in Ramona has been a good luck charm of sorts as it was the site of his previous world record toss last April when he cleared 74.35m.
Chebet surged to a 13:58.06 record in the women’s 5,000m at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon on July 5. She became the first woman to clock a time below 14 minutes. With a 61-second last lap, Chebet was electric on the final stretch as she outkicked Agnes Jebet Ngetich and Gudaf Tsegay — the previous record holder with a 14:00.21 from the same meet in 2023.
Duplantis cracked his own world record once again on August 12 at the Istvan Gyulai Memorial, as he cleared 6.29m in the pole vault at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting in Budapest. He added a centimeter to his prior 6.28m world record that he set at the Diamond League’s Stockholm meeting in June.
For Duplatis, it was his 13th record — and now all three athletes shift their focus on the most prestigious prizes of the year at world championships in Tokyo this week with the first events on Saturday.
