Sha’Carri Richardson was arrested in Orange Country near Orlando, Florida on Thursday after deputies say she allegedly drove 104 miles per hour in violation of the state’s “Super Speeding” law.
Deputies say Richardson, 25, was booked into the Orange County jail and is being charged with dangerous excessive speeding of 100 mph or more and is being held on $500 bond. According to the arrest report in addition to speeding, Richardson was also seen tailgating and traveling across multiple lanes on Florida State Road 429.
The law, formally know as the Dangerous Excessive Speeding Law, was enacted in Florida last July to combat a rise in vehicle fatalities and reckless drivers particularly on highways.
State officials describe excessive speeding as driving 50 miles per hour or more over the speed limit or reaching more than 100 miles per hour. Drivers in violation of the law face immediate arrest, vehicle impoundment and penalties.
A first offense conviction can result in days in jail a possible $500 fine with even high penalties for repeat offenders while a second conviction comes with 90 days in jail and $1,000 fine. But a third conviction means the driver can have their license suspended for 180 days up to a year.
Effective July 1, 2025, Florida’s Dangerous Excessive Speeding Law (316.1922) classifies driving 50 mph or more over the speed limit or reaching 100+ mph as a criminal misdemeanor, allowing immediate arrest, vehicle impoundment, and severe penalties.
Richardson faced other legal issues off the track last August when she was arrested and charged with domestic assault at Seattle Tacoma International Airport after an alleged incident with boyfriend Christian Coleman. A police report indicated that Richardson was involved in an verbal argument with Coleman near a security checkpoint and was seen on video shoving Coleman several times as he walked away.
Weeks later Richardson addressed the incident in a public apology to Coleman that was posted to social media.
