Sha’Carri Richardson, Gabby Thomas and Keely Hodgkinson all stormed to dominant wins at Athlos’ London showcase on Friday as the track and field season came to a dazzling close, complete with a red carpet, a spectacle of lights and crowning ceremonies.
With a packed crowd inside of StoneX Stadium on a breezy night, the intensity on the track kept the temperature rising all night as a long year of competition got its victory lap following the inaugural Ultimate Championship nearly a week ago in Budapest.
Richardson soared to a 10.80 win in the 100m in one of the best performances of her season as she leaned into a solid start out of the blocks and was in full control through the 50-meter mark. Zoe Hobbs took second in 11.19 and Anavia Battle was third in 11.25.
“I felt amazing,” Richardson said. “Being able to execute at the end of my season here at Atlos in London, our first international meet, I’m super excited for more next year. I feel really good. I wish it was the beginning of my season instead of the end.”
In the 800m, Hodgkinson tilted the narrative of the event back in her direction with a powerful 1:56.40 win that saw her put the race out of reach as she surged away from Raevyn Rogers on the bell lap. But with around 200 meters left, Hodgkinson, who was outfitted in a custom speedsuit and glasses, made a decisive move and opened a sizable gap to take the win in front of the home crowd for her second Athlos crown. Valentina Rosamilia was second in 1:58.75 and Renelle Lamote finished third in 2:00.15.
“This is a project I’ve been working on with Nike for a long time and what a place to bring it out,” Hodgkinson said about the debut of her speedsuit. “Speed meeting style, all women’s event. This is fun. Hopefully, the youngsters can see this and get their time one day. Life is about enjoying it.”
Thomas closed out the competition with a 22.13 in the 200m as she finally grabbed her first Athlos win and roared through the turn to clinch the victory over Kayla White (22.40) and Anavia Battle (22.43) while Alaysha Johnson pulled off a close 12.50 win in the 100m hurdles as she edge past Tobi Amusan (12.51) and Devynne Charlton (12.63).
Alyssa Jones cleared 6.66m in the long jump over Hilary Kpatcha (6.64m) and Monae’ Nichols (6.58m) while Klaudia Kazimierska pulled off the upset in the mile in 4:19.43 with a dramatic kick ahead of Georgia Hunter Bell (4:19.54) and Dorcus Ewoi (4:19.84).
Marileidy Paulino proved again that she could strike gold at Athlos, with a 48.73 win in the 400m over Henriette Jæger (48.78) and Nickisha Pryce (49.39).
