In just 24 hours more than 1.5 million people from 150 countries have registered for the 2028 Olympics ticket lottery, according to organizers.
The official website opened on Wednesday and drew a wave of hopefuls looking to secure tickets even as long wait times drew complaints on social media.
Still, demand is guaranteed to increase as a promise of access to tickets — which have been promised to start at just $28 — just a few clicks away in the registration portal.
“The Olympic Games returning to Los Angeles in 2028 is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to witness history,” Casey Wasserman, the LA28 Chairman and President said in a statement. “The spirit of the LA28 Games is now officially ignited around the world, and fans have already shown up in record-breaking numbers just one day into our ticket registration. The journey is just beginning, and we look forward to an epic and unforgettable experience together in 2028.”
The ticket registration period continues until March 18 and lottery winners will be notified via email shortly after as actual sales will start as soon as April 2 for select groups.
The first round of general ticket sales will begin on April 9 with the chance to buy tickets for the opening and closing ceremonies.
Each person who registers and is selected can only buy a maximum of 12 tickets.
As registration began on Wednesday, user flooded the LA28 website and many were met with a familiar message that read: “Demand is high so please hang tight. You’ll be automatically redirected to register when it’s your turn.”
But even with the longer wait times, the sign up process was brisk.
Meanwhile, when ticket sales begin in April, questions about which events will be priced starting at $28 will finally be answered. In December, organizers promised that “at least a million” tickets would be $28 while around one third would be about $100. What was not as clear was would those prices also include higher demand events like basketball, track and field, gymnastics and swimming which would easily command a premium rate.
