Mixed 4x100m relay added to 2028 Los Angeles Olympics program

The mixed 4x100m relay is one of six new events that will be added to the Olympic program in time for the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

The mixed 4x100m relay will be part of six new mixed gender events that will debut at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, the International Olympic Committee confirmed on Wednesday.

The move comes as a larger plan to broaden the Olympics program and the mixed 4x100m relay now joins the mixed 4x400m relay, which was first staged at the 2020 Tokyo Games, held in 2021.

“Today marks a monumental step forward in LA28’s pursuit to welcome the greatest collection of athletes ever assembled on the world’s biggest stage in sport,” LA28 Chief Athlete Officer Janet Evans said in a statement. “We are opening the door for more athletes to compete, win and live out their Olympic dream at the LA28 Games where athletes have always been, and always will be, the heart of the Games. We are proud to champion an athlete-centric vision that celebrates excellence and the unifying spirit of the Olympic Movement.”

The move comes as World Athletics said it would include the mixed 4x100m relay in the 2025 World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China in May and inaugural Ultimate Championships in Budapest, Hungary next year.

Six mixed gender team events will debut in 2028, including the compound bow in archery, artistic gymnastics, 4×100 mixed gender relay, mixed double sculls in rowing, golf and table tennis.

Other expanded events for 2028 will focus on similar programs for men and women, like water polo and boxing, while women’s soccer will increase the number of teams that will be able to compete.

Details of the running order for the 2028 mixed 4x100m relay has not been released but could mimic the woman, woman, man, man format that World Athletics announced last month that it will use for its events. Following the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, the format will be put up for further consideration.

Official records for the mixed 4x100m will be recognized beginning on January 1, 2026.

According to the IOC officials 24 out of 31 Olympic International Federations submitted changes in events from the Paris Games, with 46 new events were requested.
