At least one million tickets for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics in will be priced at $28 and a third under $100, according to organizers on Monday.
Starting on January 14, fans can enter a random draw to register for the right to purchase tickets, which covers all events. Winners of the draw will be announced in April and those picked will then have the option to make their selections.
Regardless of the sport, there will be tickets that fall within the $28 price.
“That’s not just lip service to a couple tickets in the corner of some venue, but a meaningful number of tickets,” LA28 senior vice president of Games delivery revenue Allison Katz-Mayfield said. “We’re looking at at least a million tickets at $28.”
The $28 price point is in line with 2024 Paris Olympics tickets.
The upfront pricing and registration method announced this week is part of a plan by organizers to calm speculation that tickets costs will be out of reach fans hoping to attend the Games.
It also comes at a time when reports of high ticket prices for next year’s World Cup has drawn criticism on FIFA, soccer’s global governing body.
FIFA kicked off its third round of ticket sales last week and many fans were shocked to discover that the lowest prices are $4,185. Still, FIFA defended its pricing, saying that it “reinvests the revenue it generates from the FIFA World Cup to fuel the growth of men’s, women’s and youth football throughout the 211 FIFA Member Associations.”
But on Tuesday, FIFA said that $60 tickets will be available for every game at the World Cup in North America. Those allocated tickets will be given to the federations whose teams are playing who can provide access to them for their most loyal fans.
With the pricing for the 2028 Games, organizers hope to be transparent about ticket distribution and ensure a fair system that includes fans who hope to attend.
“No matter when you go in, whether you’re the first person in or the last person in, you have the same opportunity,” Katz-Mayfield said.
The ticket registration period continue until 18 March. Tickets for the 2028 Paralympics will go on sale in 2027.
Track and field will lead the way when the Games begin on July 15, 2028 with all three rounds — including the final — of the women’s 100m taking place on the first day along with the men’s 10,000m and women’s shot put finals.
