Jakob Ingebrigtsen will likely delay the start of his outdoor campaign after reports from Norwegian media revealed on Monday that he suffered an Achilles injury.
Ingebrigtsen, 24, was scheduled to head to training camp at altitude when he apparently suffered a slight Achilles tendon strain, halting plans to jump into an outdoor season that has already kicked off with a pair of Diamond League meet.
In a statement first reported by Norwegian broadcaster NRK, Ingebrigtsen spokesperson Espen Skoland confirmed that proper caution would be taken and clarified he severity of the injury.
“Most likely, he will have to delay the start of his season,” Skoland said in his statement. “They’re working on getting it under control but he’s taking no risks.”
Ingebrigtsen initially planned to compete at Diamond League’s Bislett Games in Norway to kick off the season, which would be seen as a fan friendly event in his native country.
After a strong indoor season that included a pair of world records in the same race, Ingebrigtsen appeared positioned to be active in a busy year of racing leading to world championships in September.
On February 13 at the Lievin Indoor Meeting, Ingebrigtsen set the world mark in the 1,500m mark in 3:29.63 during the men’s one mile race and won in 3:45.14, taking a second record seconds later. The record was heighten since Ingebrigtsen took the mark that Yared Nuguse (3:46.63) set just a week earlier at the Millrose Games in New York.
