Elite fields revealed for epic 2025 London Marathon showdown

The elite men’s and women’s fields for the 2025 London Marathon were announced on Thursday, with both Paris Olympic gold medallists set to take on the race’s defending champions, who will also be on hand on April 27.

“This is quite simply the greatest elite field in the history of the London Marathon,” TCS London Marathon CEO Hugh Brasher said in a statement. “We have all four Paralympic and Olympic marathon champions, not to mention an Olympic triathlon champion in Alex Yee. We are welcoming back all our defending champions and, excitingly, Ruth Chepngetich who produced one of the most outstanding athletic performances of all time when she became the first woman to run inside 2:10 at Chicago last year.”

London is the third marathon major of the year and will arguably have one of the most loaded lineups of any distance events — so far — in 2025.

The women’s elite group will quickly draw attention to notable entries that includes defending champion Peres Jepchirchir, Paris Olympic gold medallist Sifan Hassan, world record holder Ruth Chepngetich and Tigst Assefa.

And the top eight women in the announced field have all run personal bests under 2:20.

“In Ruth, Sifan Hassan and Tigst Assefa we have the three fastest women of all time in the field in a thrilling showdown,” Brasher continued in his statement. “All three have run inside 2:14 and no marathon in history has ever had a faster line-up. We are always proud when we hear athletes say that the TCS London Marathon is harder to win than the Olympic or Paralympic marathon. The reason they say that is because of the quality of the fields we assemble here in London and this year, our historic 45th edition, is stronger than ever before.”

On the men’s side, Alexander Mutiso is back to stake his claim for another London title. The 2024 winner will be shoulder to shoulder in a battle with a field that features Sabastian Sawe, Timothy Kiplagat, Milkesa Mengesha and Tamirat Tola, who struck gold in the Paris Games last summer.
