Yared Nuguse wins the Fifth Avenue Mile

A Sunday Pledge to Plead The Fifth

The end of the summer means that the track and field world now takes divergent paths. Some runners battled to be triumphant at their country’s national showcases to punch their tickets to Tokyo. Others were close but still too far away to reap a view from the podium.

But now the warriors of the road begin to take the attention of the sport as the fall marathon season peaked early — with last week’s Sydney Marathon in its first lap as a major. Closer to home, the Fifth Avenue Mile drew standout names who chose the fastest 20 blocks in New York City. Not quite 1,500m and definitely not a 5k, the race is a must for elites seeking a high profile season-ender.

Yared Nuguse answered that call and punctuated his Fifth Avenue debut with a victory after Gracie Morris booted a final kick in the closing moments of the women's race to grab her own win. Sunday brought dramatic finishes and was coated by rainfall that was more footnote than hinderance. Fifth Avenue served as a loud bridge to the grueling glory of the distance road races that will anchor what's left of the year.

Fifth Avenue Mile
The course is a straight shot down Fifth Avenue and far from flat. But the final 800m is a fight to sprint with a finish line that seems much closer.

Even experienced runners will admit racing the mile can be deceptive and knowing the only mission is to surge harder — and faster — leaves many feeling depleted beyond the finish.

The wet course was far from a deterring as more than 8,500 runners in numerous separate races hit the course. Jessica Kain won the Women’s Road Mile Invitational race in 4:37.5.

Scenes after the race resembled the finish of a marathon, with some runners needing a moment to regroup after pushing out their best times.

Post race thoughts of trying to find calm after a frantic mile are common on Fifth Avenue. Troy Hill finished the Men’s Road Mile Invitational race in 4:21.5.

In streets drenched with sweat and rain, the course is a blatant assessment of where competitor are physically — and mentally – in their season.

The faces of emotion beyond the finish line are a requirement — it seems. Chasing a highly visible finish demands the extra effort of an outcome to could be a win or wondering that didn’t work on the course.

In a men’s pro race with several lead changes early on, there was no true sense of who would make a move. Hobbs Kessler finished tenth in 3:49.6.

Parker Wolfe joined the other podium finishers for a lap to greet a roaring section of fans after he took second in 3:48.
